How To: Look after your Rattan Garden Furniture!

09 May 2022 15:37

When it comes to garden furniture there is so much to choose from – from dining sets to corner sofas finding the perfect option for you can be hard. But its important to know how to look after your garden furniture when your not using it so you can get the most from it summer after summer, so this is our How-To guide to keep your rattan outdoor furniture looking and performing at its best for as long as possible.

COVER IT UP

While your rattan garden furniture is weatherproof and doesn’t need coving during the winter, we recommend that you do cover to keep it looking at its best for longer.

Some of the sets we sell wither come with a cover or have one that can be purchased separately, but garden furniture covers can be bought from sites like Amazon – it is important to make sure that any cover your purchase is large enough to cover the entire set and that if necessary it can be fastened down to prevent it from blowing away.

Covers aren’t only useful for protecting your garden furniture from rain, they also keep your set from protection from UV rays which can fade the colour, snow, frost and falling leaves which can leave a stain and therefore more cleaning. Should your garden furniture be covered in the rain the waterproof material that the cover is made from allows the water to bead and roll off, and while the fabric of most covers is strong, extreme winds and rains can cause some damage so we recommend that your move your garden furniture ideally inside or out of the direct wind.

KEEPING IT CLEAN

If you are leaving your garden furniture uncovered or outside, it can become dirty and will therefore require cleaning. All our rattan garden furniture sets are easy to clean, in most cases they can simply be wiped down with mild soapy water – you should avoid getting your garden furniture too wet or using a harsh detergent/abrasive cloth as these can cause damage.

We all know that accidents can happen so if a food spill or drink stain occurs the faster they are dealt with the less likely they are to cause any permanent marks. If one should occur, then you should avoid rubbing it as this can push it further into the weave, instead gently wipe the affected area with a soft cloth and some soapy water.

WASHING THE COVERS

While your rattan garden furniture may be waterproof the cushions are not so we recommend removing and storing them inside when they are not in use. While the material of the cushion covers offers some natural protection against the rain, if they are left exposed to large amounts of water then the integrity of the internal material will be affected. If the cushions do get wet, then it is important to let them dry out properly before storing them away.

The cushion covers on most of our rattan sets are machine washable on the hand wash setting, however, it is important to note that some of the zips can be quite delicate so please take care when removing and reapplying them.

OUR 4 TOP TIPS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR RATTAN GARDEN FURNITURE ARE:

  1. Where possible store your rattan furniture inside during the winter months.
  2. If this is not possible then use a rain cover to keep your garden furniture protected.
  3. Store the cushions inside even if the rain cover is used to prevent them from getting wet and breaking down.
  4. If spills or stains occur then deal with them as quickly as possible by gently wiping the affected area with a soft cloth and mild soapy water.
